COURSE OBJECTIVES

bulletThis course provides an overview of autobiographies of slaves/former slaves who lived in North America, Great Britain and the Caribbean. The course introduces slavery as a practice found throughout the "New World" and not merely confined inside the borders of the United States. The course will address the complexity of autobiographies: author, scribe, audience, motives, truth, censorship, etc.

GRADING SCALE

bullet90-100 = A
bullet80-89 = B
bullet70-79 = C
bullet60-69 = D

ATTENDANCE

bulletAttendance is mandatory. All absences are equal; there are no excused absences. Students may miss 2 class sessions without penalty. The attendance grade will be determined using the following scale:
bullet0-2 absences = A
bullet3 absences = B
bullet4 absences = C
bullet5 absences = D
bullet6 absences = F (0 points)
bulletAthletes whose sports are "in season" must use their 2 "free" absences for their away games. Any absence over 2 which is due to an away game will not count against the student.
bulletThe professor reserves the right to modify this attendance policy at her discretion if she deems that there are circumstances which warrant a modification (i.e. prolonged physical or mental illness).
