Slave Narrative of the Americas

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course provides an overview of autobiographies of slaves/former slaves who lived in North America, Great Britain and the Caribbean. The course introduces slavery as a practice found throughout the "New World" and not merely confined inside the borders of the United States. The course will address the complexity of autobiographies: author, scribe, audience, motives, truth, censorship, etc.

GRADING SCALE

	90-100 = A
	80-89 = B
	70-79 = C
	60-69 = D
	below 60 = F

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is mandatory. All absences are equal; there are no excused absences. Students may miss 2 class sessions without penalty. The attendance grade will be determined using the following scale:

	0-2 absences = A
	3 absences = B
	4 absences = C
	5 absences = D
	6 absences = F (0 points)

Athletes whose sports are "in season" must use their 2 "free" absences for their away games. Any absence over 2 which is due to an away game will not count against the student.

The professor reserves the right to modify this attendance policy at her discretion if she deems that there are circumstances which warrant a modification (i.e. prolonged physical or mental illness).
